We often have openings for contributors who want to get their name/ brand out there. Check in regularly for the types of contributions we’re looking for and open to, as they change as the climbing seasons change.  We are currently looking for:

FILLED: Opening for Travel Writer

We are looking for a travel writer for BCM that will act as a journalist and writer for the site. Most articles will be assigned with an outline and an angle to go by, which will be provided by the editorial team. The writer will have some autonomy over content, given the pitched article is accepted by the editorial team and the writer will start with one of their own article ideas per month on the third week of every month. Month one, two and four will have assigned work at start.

Work Scope:

  • Articles will be between 750 and 1500 words.
  • Articles will focus on mountaineering, hiking… and are in-depth contributions to the mountaineering and outdoor adventure readership. By focus we mean your travel articles will be associated with travel that can be undertaken when practicing mountaineering and outdoor sports. An example of this would be, doing a piece on wine culture in Argentina, while mentioning some aspects of mount Aconcagua which is in the area.
  • Payment for writers will be $10/per to start.
  • Writer gets recognition for their work, and a column link to share on their social media profiles that links back to all of their works on the site. Writer is featured on the site with a bio and a full article about them, photo and their websites upon start.

Experience:

  • At least 1-2 years experience writing for an online publication blog.
  • Experience with WordPress.com is a must.
  • Experience in the fields of mountaineering, hiking, national park activities, camping or outdoor sports is preferred.
  • Experience with journalistic writing is a must. This is a journalistically-styled publication, not a blog.

Requirements:

  • Links to previous online works by the writer that are not ghostwritten.
  • Excellent English is a must.
  • Excellent skills in proofreading and writing are required.
  • Journalism experience.
  • A love for all things “mountain and travel.”

Mountaineers on how to pack an ice climbing bag

  • You must be a professional or seasoned ice-climbing mountaineer.
  • You must provide photographs of all the contents of your pack laid out in a neat grid. on a flat surface. Images can be broken up into 2 or 3 photos to ensure good viewing of the gear.
  • You must also include some images of the packing process, single items of importance for the piece.
  • You are free to mention the brands you use, if you currently have a sponsor or are partnered with a brand, you may include them in the feature.

Mountaineers on telling the story of a successful summit on an 8,000 m peak

  • You must have successfully submitted an 8,000 m peak between 2005 to present.
  • Supply images of your expedition.

Hikers on their favorite gear/clothing recommendations

  • These features are critical in nature, so we need images of your gear recommendations.
  • Include why you like the gear and where you use it most.
  • Supply recommendations for different hiking terrains.
  • Examples include brand/style of hiking clothes, packs, food, gear and shoes. Also specific fabrics you prefer or fabric blends for certain clothing and hiking tips.

International Expeditions on cultural travel

  • Must be a feature about an area outside of the United States.
  • Must cover the local cuisine, restaurants and markets.
  • Must include photographs of the trip.
  • Must include how you first learned about the area, what you were doing there, if it’s a focal point or necessary way stop to a mountain.

How Does Contributing Help You?

Mountaineering and outdoor sports are expensive recreations, and while you can be an excellent climber, have excellent gear to market or have tons of records under your belt, in order to gain recognition and hopefully sponsors/partners, what you need iis exposure! We leave our door open for mountaineers, hikers, professional outdoorsmen, companies, and brands to open up to the public by offering some quality content and letting the world know who they are.
